ViewPane 1.0.2 is out: live view on Frigate 0.18, and everything we previewed

ViewPane 1.0.2 went to Apple for review on October 24 and was released on October 26. It carries everything in our 1.0.2 preview: Live, Clip and Snooze buttons on alerts, per-camera object and zone choices, the recordings timeline, swiping between cameras, stepping through events, and name, zone and plate filters. A few things were added since that post.

Full-screen live view on Frigate 0.18

Frigate 0.18 stopped serving the stream path that full-screen live view used, so on a stock 0.18 server the camera screen showed a stream error. 1.0.2 plays the same live stream Frigate’s own web page uses, so full-screen live works on 0.18 without changing your server.

    • On iPhone this needs iOS 17.1 or newer. Older versions can’t play that kind of stream.
    • If your phone can’t play it, or your server signs in with Basic Auth or a bearer token, the camera screen shows a fresh snapshot about once a second instead of an error. It links to the one server step that brings back the regular player.
    • If you already added that proxy step, nothing changes for you.

    Also in this release

    • Opening the app after the phone has been asleep waits for the connection instead of showing Server Unreachable.
    • Live view recovers on its own when the first attempt can’t reach the server, and says why when a stream won’t start.
    • Subscription purchases and restores cope better with slow connections, and the price shown always comes from the App Store.
    • Clips load faster.
    • 1.0.2 needs iOS 16 or newer. iPhones still on iOS 15 keep 1.0.1.

If you run the ViewPane relay, the :0.6 image already has the server side of these fixes. Pull it and restart the container to pick them up.

    When

1.0.2 is now available. Update from the App Store if your phone hasn’t picked it up yet. Nothing to reinstall, and your servers and settings carry over. Android is still in Google Play closed testing; get on the list if you want the opt-in link.

Coming in ViewPane 1.0.2: alerts that open what's happening, a recordings timeline, and more

ViewPane 1.0.2 is out on the App Store. It’s the biggest update since launch, and most of it came straight from using the app every day: getting from an alert to the right picture faster, and finding a moment in your footage without typing timestamps. Here’s what’s new.

    Alerts that open what’s happening

    • Tap an alert while it’s still going on and you land on the live camera. Tap it later and you get the event and its clip instead. ViewPane asks your Frigate server whether the event has ended, so it picks for you.
    • Live, Clip and Snooze 1h buttons on every alert. Long-press or expand a notification and choose. Snooze pauses that one camera’s alerts on your phone for an hour, handy for a yard party or a run of deliveries.
    • Choose what each camera tells you about. In Notification Rules, a camera can alert for only certain objects (people only on the driveway, say) and only in zones you’ve drawn in Frigate. If a zone is later renamed or removed, ViewPane keeps alerting rather than going quiet.

Alerts are forwarded by your own relay and are best-effort: they can be delayed or dropped by the phone, the network or your server, so ViewPane is for keeping an eye on your cameras, not something to rely on for safety. The object and zone choices need the latest relay (0.6); the app tells you if yours needs an update.

    Watching and finding footage

    • Swipe between cameras. In full screen, swipe left or right to move to the next camera, in the same order as your camera grid.
    • Step through events. Previous and Next on an event take you through your Events list, filters included, without going back.
    • See what’s happening now. Events that are still in progress show a Live button in the list and a “Happening now” bar on the event, one tap from the live camera.
    • A real recordings timeline. Pick a day, see which hours have footage and where events happened on an hour strip, and tap to jump there. Fine-tune by a minute or ten, pick a length, and play.
    • Find people, places and plates. Pro filters for the Events list now include recognized names, zones and license plates, alongside camera, object type and date.

Alert buttons, alert choices, recordings and the extra filters are part of Pro ($9.99/year). Swiping between cameras, stepping through events and the Live shortcuts are in the free app.

    When

1.0.2 is now available on the App Store, released October 26; here’s what else is in it. It’s a regular App Store update: nothing to reinstall, and your servers and settings carry over. Android is heading into Google Play closed testing: testers get it first, and there’s no date for the public listing yet. Get on the list if you want the opt-in link when the test opens.

ViewPane 1.0.1: a real layout for Live Wall

ViewPane 1.0.1 is out on the App Store as a regular update. Most of it is for Live Wall, the Pro view that plays your cameras live in one grid.

    Live Wall

    • Tile size. Auto fits every camera on screen at the biggest size that works. You can also pick Large, Medium or Small.
    • A big tile at the top. Long-press any camera on the wall to make it the big tile. Long-press it again to put it back.
    • A Layout button on the wall. Tile size, the big tile and which cameras to show, all in one place.
    • The wall scrolls when the tiles don’t fit, and the connection line is no longer cut off on phones.

    Also in this release

    • Deleting and reinstalling the app now starts clean instead of bringing back your old servers and settings.
    • The terms screen asks you to tick a checkbox before you agree, and turning on Motion Alerts shows a short acknowledgement first.
    • The app icon fills the whole tile.

If your phone hasn’t picked it up yet, update from the App Store. Found something that doesn’t work on your setup? Tell us.

ViewPane for iOS is now on the App Store

It’s here. ViewPane for iOS is live on the App Store — download it free, point it at your Frigate server, and every camera is on your phone. No account, no cloud, no trial clock.

Everything you need to get connected is in the docs, including Tailscale remote access and push alerts. If something doesn’t work on your setup, tell us. A first release means you’ll find things we didn’t, and fixes ship as regular App Store updates.

Pro ($9.99/year) unlocks the extras, but the free app is the real app. Android is heading into Google Play closed testing: testers get it first, and there’s no date for the public listing yet. When the test opens we email the opt-in link; get on the list if you want in early.

One more pass before we launch

Update, September 10, 2026: approved and released. ViewPane for iOS is now on the App Store.

Short version: ViewPane 1.0 is still with Apple, and we’re using the extra days well.

App Review came back with a note about how one of our screens scaled on larger displays — an iPad running the iPhone app. Fair catch. It’s fixed, and while we were in there we cleaned up a handful of smaller rough edges we found in the same sweep. A new build is on its way back to Apple now.

We’re not putting a new date on something sitting in someone else’s queue, so here’s the honest version: review usually turns around in about a day. The plan for the moment it was approved was the same one that shipped: free download, every camera on your phone, no account required. Pro is there if you want the extras, but nothing about trying ViewPane costs a dollar.

We’d rather hand you a build we’re happy with than hit a date we picked ourselves. If you want to get your Frigate server ready in the meantime, the docs are done and waiting.

ViewPane 1.0 is in App Review

Update, September 10, 2026: approved and released — ViewPane for iOS is now on the App Store.

Update, September 3: review came back with a note and we’re taking one more pass — see One more pass before we launch above.

ViewPane 1.0 for iOS was submitted to Apple’s App Review tonight — a little later than we’d planned. Our final round of launch testing surfaced a few critical items we needed to assess, and we weren’t willing to ship your first impression until they were fixed and re-verified on real devices. (One of them turned into a proper detective story — the full writeup is on the blog.)

At the time, release was aiming for September 1. The plan once Apple approved was the same one that shipped: free download, all your cameras, no account required. Pro is there if you want it, but nothing about trying ViewPane costs a dollar.

While you wait: the launch announcement covers what’s in 1.0 and why we built it, and the docs are ready if you want to prep your Frigate server.

Android is heading into Google Play closed testing: testers get it first, and there’s no date for the public listing yet. When the test opens we email the opt-in link; get on the list if you want in early.
